Presentation
Theme: "The Protection
of World Heritage & Cultural Tourism"
Jordan, 16 - 20 December 2002
The Seventh International Seminar of the Forum UNESCO
– University & Heritage (FUUH), will take place in Jordan, in
the period between December 16th-20th, 2002. The Seminar
will be organized by Yarmouk University, in collaboration with the Hashemite
University under the theme “The Protection of World Heritage
& Cultural Tourism”. This seminar will be the occasion
to make universities meet with tourism industry leaders and to help both
world, that of the universities and that of the private tourism industry
to better understand themselves and identify mutual concerns, expectations
and actions.
Forum UNESCO – University & Heritage was created in 1996, through
the agreement signed by UNESCO with the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
FUUH is now a joint program between UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the
Polytechnic University of Valencia.
The Seminar: objectives. The seventh seminar of the Forum UNESCO –
University & Heritage will focus on cultural tourism
and its role in sustainable development on one hand and its relationship
with the conservation of cultural heritage on the other.
The main objective of the seventh Seminar is to tackle the question of
how to strike the delicate balance between promotion of cultural tourism
and the safeguarding and protection of cultural heritage, tourism main
asset.
The connection between cultural tourism and conservation of cultural heritage
is not obvious or Cleary defined. A major concern at this forum will be
the imminent thereat posed by the rapid increase in cultural tourism on
cultural resources. Rather than being a tool conservation, tourism in
many cases can accelerate certain destructive processes of the cultural
heritage. With the obvious exception of ticket entry fees into cultural
heritage sites, the direct benefits to our cultural heritage are certainly
limited. On the contrary, it has been noted that beyond certain limits,
tourism can become a negative element concerning conservation and use
of the cultural heritage. It is hoped that the seminar will find effective
answers to many open questions in this field, such as:
What are the tendencies of development in the market of cultural
tourism?
How may cultural tourism assist in the conservation of the cultural
heritage?
How can cultural tourism become a factor in social and economic development?
The forum will definitely provide an excellent opportunity for heritage
specialists across the world to meet, to learn about each others work
and to promote the protection of the cultural heritage through cooperative
university projects.
