Forum-UNESCO: University and Heritage is an international network that gathers universities concerned with the issue of heritage in its different aspects and aims to promote the commitment of researchers, professors and students to the protection and the valorization of both material and non-material heritage. A special Chart has defined the following objectives to this network:

  • Mobilize at a national and international level human resources and capacities from universities and professional institutions with a view to working jointly for the conservation of the heritage of humanity;
  • Set up a movement of solidarity and mutual assistance by establishing links among universities at a national and international levels;
  • Set up an interacting platform between universities and experts in conservation;
  • Develop university studies on heritage;
  • Encourage students to participate in projects on heritage issues, under the supervision and with the assistance of specialists and professors at a local, regional and international level;
  • Promote mutual understanding among students from different nationalities, and institute a multi-cultural dialogue for the preservation of peace.

The first Forum held in Valencia (Spain) in 1996 hosted 80 universities representing 41 countries. La Universidad Politecnica de Valencia has established a data base for this occasion, thereby starting an effective network. The second Forum held in 1997 in l'Universite Laval au Quebec helped to better structure this network, while the third Forum of Melbourne 1998 put more stress on the development of international cooperation projects in the area of heritage, and highlighted the experiences of the Asia-Pacific region. In the current year an international meeting of university rectors at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris has strongly consolidated this international network that comprehends 225 universities up till now.
