A workshop on the Australian Research Council-funded project being carried out by an international team of researchers based at Deakin University. The team is making a comparative study of urban heritage attitudes, threats, planning policies and practices in twelve cities across East, Southeast and South Asia. The study focuses on the steady erosion of what many commentators in Asia and the West have regarded as the typically Asian' qualities of those cities, particularly in terms of their built form and under the impact of rapid economic and cultural globalisation. The workshop represents and important point in the project when the various city sub-teams come together to read drafts, discuss ideas, establish common themes and form tentative conclusions. The workshop is open to the public. Organiser: Professor William Logan, Heritage Studies, Deakin University
Option 3: One-day Museology Student's Conference:"2Oth Century Graduates: 21 st Century Practice - Transforming Museum Services" A post-Forum, pre-ICOM seminar for new museum works, students and graduates of museum studies and related courses will be held at the Village Roadshow Theatrette, State Library of Victoria on Friday, 9 October 1998. The seminar will serve as a forum where issues of concern for museology can be canvassed. The main focus will be on the changing role of the museum worker in the 21st century. It will also provide an opportunity to showcase recent and current research pertaining to museum issues and allow new and existing networks and affiliations to be strengthened and developed.
