Theme: "Forum UNESCO - University and Heritage" Spain, 2 - 6 October 1996 As part of its 1996-2001 Medium-Term Strategy, UNESCO should make every effort to mobilize international solidarity and make a decisive input for the development of specialized co-operation networks concerning the heritage, as well as step up its activities to achieve greater participation of young people in development programmes and projects for the safeguarding of the cultural heritage and its environment (28 Cl4 Paras. 129 and 223). In recent years we have effectively seen growing commitment on the part of young people, particularly those in youth-oriented NGOs engaged in the heritage: this development is borne out by the excellent results obtained by the national and international sites organized by UNESCO in Cambodia, Egypt, Morocco, Romania, Senegal and Viet Nam. Youth training to provide future heritage specialists is carried on in universities and specialized institutions that are now employing a large proportion of their researchers, laboratories and equipment in favour of day-to-day heritage work. In number of countries, universities are now working on operational projects for protection of the heritage at local, national and international levels. Moreover, the establishment of an international network - Forum UNESCO / University and Heritage - is among the priorities of the Cultural Heritage Division of the Culture Sector of UNESCO for the 1996-1 997 biennium. This network, consisting of students and teachers, will link up universities that have disciplines related to the heritage: archaeology, architecture, urban development, the fine arts, informatics, and will mobilize their human and technical resources for protection and presentation of the heritage in the interest of the populations. Forum-UNESCO / University and Heritage will have as principal objectives:
Creating an international network should be mainly the result of the students and university teachers work that are decided to be compromised with this project. For this reason, they should think together in a constructive way about the network's role, its objectives, its priority actions, its mechanisms, its practical forms and its operation. For this purpose, a seminar organised jointly by UNESCO and the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (Spain), from the 2nd to the 6th of October 1996. ICCROM, ICOMOS, ICOM and other organisations interested in Heritage, will participate in the refered international seminar.
