AWARDS
BERKELEY PRIZE 2011 is launched! Deadline for entries:
1 November 2010
The Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Design Excellence endowment
was established in the Department of Architecture at the University
of California, Berkeley to promote architecture as a social art
through research, writing, and criticism: traditionally under-represented
aspects of the architecture curriculum. Each year, the Prize Committee
selects a topic important to the understanding of the interaction
of people and the built world that becomes the focus of the Essay
Competition. This year the topic is: Valuing the Sacred.
The Committee poses a Question on this website related to the topic.
Students enrolled in any undergraduate architecture program throughout
the world are invited to submit a 500-word essay proposal responding

COMPETITIONS
Picturing Progress: A U.N. Photo Contest
In 2001, the United Nations adopted an ambitious list of eight goals
for international development. The Millennium Development Goals
include tall orders like "eradicate extreme poverty and hunger"
and "achieve universal primary education;" the
agreement was to have achieved the goals by 2015.
With that date swiftly approaching, the consensus seems to be that
conditions have improved — but perhaps not enough. In just
a few days, world leaders will gather in New York City to gauge
progress. Meanwhile, the U.N.'s second annual Picture This photo
contest has come to a close, with the aim of reinvigorating the
cause through images.
