It is with great sadness that UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, learned of the death of the Spanish artist and painter Antoni Tapies, an emblematic figure in contemporary art.

“Antoni Tapies revolutionized abstract art by inventing a formal language of rare intensity from simple materials with very few means. His death is a tremendous loss for all art lovers,” said the Director-General.  “Today, I express my sincere condolences to his family and friends, to the beautiful city of Barcelona that he loved and to which he gave so much, as well as to the government of Spain and the Spanish people.” She added. 

Deeply affected by the Spanish Civil War, Antoni Tapies placed his search for peace and defense for human rights at the heart of his creativity. He donated one of his works, the “totes les coses” (All things) to UNESCO House in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Organization...
