Theme: Taking the Perspective of the Others
The ability to take the perspective of the ‘other’
from a young age is part of an ingoing process of development (Bennet
& Sani, 2004 ; Gilligan, 1982; Kohlberg, 1984; Mead, 1934).
Such development is inextricably linked with the sociocultural context
and the social representations that students and teachers have regarding
the past. Past animosities between social groups and asymmetries
of status hinder the capacity to develop the skills to take the
perspective of the other, especially if the educational policies
suppress polyphony and multiperspectivity in the teaching and learning
of history.
The 2009 EUROCLIO Conference aims to afford the co-ordination of
different perspectives and weaving of distinct historical narratives
in Cyprus, Europe and the world. Via workshops, on-site visits,
discussion groups and interactive presentations participants will
take the perspective of the ‘others’ and discuss how
to promote intercultural dialogue in history teaching. The overall
emphasis of the Conference will be to enhance and promote the critical
historical skills of participants, their ability to comprehend and
contribute to different perspectives, dialogue and cooperation.
