| Summary: |
This year, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) is devoting
its conference to discuss the role of museums in the process of
preserving heritage. UNESCO has described heritage as “our
legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to
future generations”. But what does heritage mean to us in
the Caribbean? Are we focusing on preserving the past or are we
actively interacting with our respective communities to create present-day
manifestations? We feel this is a good time to explore the varying
ways in which material and inmaterial heritage is defined in the
Caribbean.
This year’s program includes a presentation by ICOM President
and MAC co-founder, Ms. Alissandra Cummins; a training on heritage
selection, research and presentation to the local communities; the
opportunity to travel to Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican
Republic, to visit several Slave Route and architectural heritage
sites and see cultural manifestations that have been declared intangible
heritage by UNESCO. As always, there will be plenty of opportunity
to share experiences with colleagues from the region, to discuss
MAC projects and to enjoy the hospitality of the host country.
