UNESCO Quito organizes this meeting which will take place in
Quito on 29 and 30 November, 2007.
The objective is that countries count on an international
legal instrument, that protects Cultural heritage properties in
seas, rivers and lake, and that at the moment, is under an increasing
improper exploitation that brings as a consequence the loss of an
immense part of the cultural legacy, still not known, and that is
part of the history of the humanity.
UNESCO’s mission of is to increase the awareness of official
representatives of the countries of Latin America and Caribbean
to ratify and subscribe the 2001 Convention on the underwater protection
of cultural heritage.
The preparation of the meeting will be carried out between the offices
of UNESCO Costa Rica, Havana, Jamaica, Paris and Ecuador.
