| Summary: |
Cidade Velha, the oldest settlement in Cape Verde and the first
permanent European settlement in the tropics, will be the theme
of an international conference next week organized by the Institute
of Cultural Investigation and Patrimony (IIPC). With the them “Cidade
Velha: the Future of the Past,” the event comes as part of
the Cape Verdean government’s offensive aimed at securing
the stauts of UNESCO World Heritage Site for the historic village.
According to a note from the IIPC, the institute hopes the event,
which will take place in Cidade Velha itself, will “spur reflection
on the role of Santiago de Cabo Verde, Cidade Velha and the islands
of Cape Verde between the 15th and 17th centuries and the presence
of their legacy in the configuration of contemporary cultural expressions
that emerged out of the slave trade.”
Over the course of the three-day conference, themes such as “The
Atlanticization of Slavery,” “The Problem of the Management
of Historic Sites” and “Cultural Patrimony as a Factor
of Development” will be discussed by specialists from Mexico,
Spain, the United States, Portugal, Argentina, Cuba, Senegal and
Mozambique.
