As part of the commemoration ot the Bicentenary Abolition of
the Slave Trade in the Bahamas, two major initiatives are held on
the subject: a conference dealing with current research and resources,
and a workshop to develop a children-centered programme in Caribbean
museums.
9–11 September: Caribbean Museums Workshop
The theme of this workshop is "Developing Children’s
Programmes around Slavery and the Slave Trade". Children's
programming includes not only school programmes but leisure time
activities, family programming and some general public & community
events.
The opportunity for this collaboration of process and content enables
a workshop on children's programming (education in Caribbean museums)
along with attention to resources and research related to a very
prominent theme among museums in the Caribbean and the UK: commemorating
the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Trans Atlantic Slave
Trade in 1807. Workshop participants are invited to participate
in the workshop and seminar from Sept. 10-15 and are using the same
theme to review and enhance the processes for developing programmes
in the workshop and learning about the research and resources available
through current activities.
12–15 September: Conference on Slavery, Abolition
and Emancipation
The conference examines ways to strengthen the Pompey Museum as
a resource centre on the history and social development of the African
Diaspora and expand its role within the region. Ten overseas delegations
and over sixty local experts attend the meeting.
