| Summary: |
The International Conference of Latin American and Caribbean University
Chancellors aims not only at seeking alternatives for the insertion
of Universities in broad strategic projects for social development,
but also to experiment with forms of solidary internationalization
in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In face of the need that the social responsibilities of Universities
be thought of in terms of the major shifts taking place in society,
culture and technology, and in response to the challenges of today,
this event tries to encourage the debate among University chancellors
and presidents, targeting the development of strategies and the
implementation of actions geared towards the responsibilities of
Latin American and Caribbean Universities in the societies where
they are inserted, as well as with the promotion of deeper continental
integration.
This Conference will be a privileged occasion for a re-evaluation
of the role of Latin American and Caribbean Universities in view
of the urge for social inclusion, and it will establish reflections
about the possible manners of both reconciling scientific excellence
with social relevance and of searching for adequate and creative
ways of broadening the regional/global relations.
With this respect, the International Conference of Latin American
and Caribbean University Chancellors intends to open a space for
reaffirmation of the commitment of Latin American and Caribbean
Universities with society at large, and with cooperative
networks in both continents. Therefore, its basic proposal is to
reinforce the ethical and moral value of University education and
of scientific instruments in order to enhance the Universities’
contribution to public culture in view of the very social spirit
that characterizes the University.
