Forum UNESCO-University and Heritage (FUUH) is an UNESCO Project for undertaking activities to protect and safeguard the cultural and natural heritage, through an informal networkof higher education institutions. FUUH is under the joint responsibility of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Spain. Summary:

The objective of the colloquium is in the line of the last UICN Summit on Protected Marine Areas (Washington, 2007) and of the First world congress on Protected Marine Areas (Geelong, Australia, November 2005). The French UICN Committee has wished to continue the works on the elaboration of a national strategy "marine areas protected" organizing the First national colloquium on the topic: "the protected marine areas: What strategies for which objectives ?

The objective of this colloquium is to discuss among the different sea professionals and to exchange opinions on the challenges of protection of the French marine territory the existing experiences in the field of protected marine areas (AMP) national as well as regional and international, to propose criteria of designation for marine sites that must be protected and to create AMP networks, with the purpose of establishing the scientific bases for a true French policy and a national strategy of protected marine areas.

The main objective of the colloquium is therefore to establish the bases for a strategy for the protected marine areas that meet the challenges of conservation of the marine biodiversity in France.
Therefore, recommendations will be made to the new Agency of protected marine Areas, as well as to the Ministries of ecology, sustainable development, overseas and Fisheries.

Topics covered :

1. The role and the position of protected marine areas in the protection strategies
The topic of the protected marine areas will be framed within the national, European and international context, and the crucial challenges will be extracted.

2. The protected marine areas in the French context
A state of the art revision will be carried out on the different existing French tools of protection and in progress and some foreign experiences will also be presented.

3. Proposals for a national strategy of protected marine areas, workshops "regional marine ecosystems »
The different criteria of designation of the protected marine areas will be defined;finally, after several works in the form of workshops "regional marine Ecosystems" recommendations will be drafted to establish the first bases of a national strategy for protected marine areas.

Stakeholders and target audience :
Agency of the protected marine Areas, Ministries of ecology, sustainable development and planning, overseas, and fisheries and managers of protected areas, French and foreign experts and scientists, socioprofesionals , groups and political leaders, associations and NGOs.
