The ICOMOS Thailand and the Faculty of Architecture Chulalongkorn
University, in collaboration with the Fine Art Committee, the Association
of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage (ASA) have organized
the International Scientific Symposium as part of ICOMOS Thailand
2nd General Assembly, which responds to the expanding concept of
cultural heritage interpretation as well as to the increasing interpretation
movements that employ complex technology, marketing and economic
strategy, and cultural heritage management.
The rising notion triggers the questions of "What are the
appropriate principles, goals, techniques and public participation
in cultural heritage contexts which include buildings, districts,
communities, cities, and cultural landscapes?" as well as of
"How to interpret both tangible and intangible values of cultural
heritage sites as key factors of effective preservation and management
process?" Hence the symposium theme is "Interpretation:
from Monument to Living Heritage".
We, therefore, welcome submission of abstract(s) from the ICOMOS
Thailand members and those who are interested in making presentations
at this international scientific symposium under these 3 sub-themes:
1. Concept and practice in heritage interpretation
This sub-theme is aimed to provide academics and practitioners in
conservation the opportunities to exchange their views and ideas
about concepts and functions of cultural heritage interpretation
from different perspectives and about effective presentations that
can help improve the public's understanding of cultural heritage
sites in various dimensions in the way that is relevant to current
circumstances and today's social attitude toward cultural heritage.
2. Techniques and tools of interpretation
This sub-theme is expected that the advancement of techniques and
tools for effective interpretation of cultural heritage will be
discussed based on various experiences and environs of participating
academics and experts in order to benefit the future of cultural
heritage conservation.
3. Local participation in heritage management and interpretation
This sub-theme is to provide practitioners who work on cultural
heritage interpretation and management the opportunities to share
their work experiences related to local participation and community
that are frequently key components of a successful conservation
program.
