One hundred photographs featuring outstanding vernacular architecture,
traditional settlements, cultural and natural landscapes, megaliths
and traditional crafts of Nias Island (Indonesia) are displayed
during the final exhibition from 22 to 24 June 2007 in several locations
in Medan.
The photo exhibition was launched on 25 May 2007 at the University
of North Sumatra in conjunction with the Stakeholder Meeting on
Nias Cultural Heritage Development organized in Medan by UNESCO
Jakarta in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism,
the University of North Sumatra and UNDP/Indonesia.
The photo displays are part of the UNESCO Culture project under
the UN Joint Programming in Nias within the framework of UNDP Aceh-Nias
Emergency Response and Transitional Recovery (ERTR) Programme, which
was launched in September 2006. Under this UN Joint Programme, UNESCO
focuses on pilot activities to support the redevelopment of cultural
tourism for sustainable development based on the conservation, development
and tourism presentation of Nias cultural heritage resources.
Nias Island in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia suffered substantial
damage and loss of life in the aftermath of the 26 December 2004
tsunami and the earthquake that struck on 28 March 2005. The cultural
heritage of Nias comprises a rich combination of cultural landscapes
with physical evidence of megalithic sites, traditional settlements,
remarkable vernacular architecture and a variety of crafts and traditional
customs.
