To mark the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade by
the British Parliament (1807), this four-day Landmark Conference
will explore the following themes related to slavery and the slave
trade:

- Human rights and modern slavery;
- Networks of Slavery;
- Abolition without Emancipation;
- White Atlantic Slavery;
- Modern Day Refugees in Britain;
- Human Rights;
- Genocide and Slavery;
- Slave Memories and Anthropological Perspectives;
- Slavery and Gender;
- Reconstructing Lives – Lessons of Venture Smith;
- Boundaries of Freedom and Coercion;
- Legacies of Slavery and Reparations;
- Slavery in the Gulf and Indian Ocean;
- The Wilberforce Emancipation Lecture;
- African-Caribbean Communities in Britain;
- Political Economy of the Slave Trade.
This event was initiated by Prof. David Richardson, Director of
the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation
(WISE) and member of the International Scientific Committee of the
UNESCO Slave Route Project. More than 200 participants will attend
the conference, and keynote speakers will include: Archbishop Desmond
Tutu, Patron of (WISE) and David Lammy MP, Minister for Culture.
