A qanat is a traditional water mining system used to provide
a reliable supply of water to human settlements or for irrigation
in arid and semi-arid climates. This technique taps into subterranean
water in a manner that efficiently delivers large quantities of
water to the surface without need for pumping.
The International Centre on Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures
(ICQHS),
a centre operating under the auspices of UNESCO, is organizing a
training course on qanats in Yazd, Iran from 1 to 4 July 2007.
The course is designed for researchers and engineers from countries
involved in qanat systems. It aims to provide a multidisciplinary
approach to qanats, particularly by incorporating indigenous knowledge
into new methods of construction, preservation, rehabilitation and
operation of these systems.
It also aims to familiarize experts with the importance of cultural
and technical aspects of qanat systems as well as the community
life linked to these systems. |
