| The creation in 2003 of the INTERPOL Experts Group (IEG) on stolen
cultural property was one of INTERPOL’s responses to the threat
of looting and destruction of cultural property as experienced in
Iraq.
The following items are discussed:
- Follow-up of the recommendations adopted in 2008;
- Progress report by the General Secretariat of INTERPOL;
- Inclusion of the Stolen Works of Art database of INTERPOL on the
secure website;
- Follow-up of the application of the model of UNESCO – World
Customs Organization (WCO) export certificate for cultural property;
- The sale of cultural property on Internet (follow-up of initiatives);
- Activities by other countries and international organizations.
The IEG is composed of key experts from international organizations,
cultural institutions, and law enforcement agencies and serves as
a strategic advisory Board to the General Secretariat and INTERPOL
member countries on art-related crime. It provides advice and guidance
in legal and technical matters with a view to fighting cultural
property crime more effectively in identifying stolen cultural property
and the criminal networks involved in their trafficking.
The meeting of the IEG is organized in co-operation with the Section
of Museums and Cultural Objects of UNESCO. |
