Summary: Transport and communications museums face a challenging future. Visitors’ expectations rise year by year. So too does competition for their time and money. But funding from traditional sources to maintain and build collections declines. Yet the popularity and international standing of the best museums in the sector show that innovative thinking and high levels of professionalism can pay off.

The 35th conference of IATM offers a unique opportunity to share in the secrets of success and to develop solutions for the challenges ahead. Bringing together museum directors, trustees, professionals and practitioners, academics and others concerned with the theory and practice of museums and related heritage sites, IATM conference is essential for everyone with a hand in shaping the future of museums.

The conference will be opened by Professor Helen Weinstein, Director of the Institute for the Public Understanding of the Past, University of York, UK. As well as the opportunity to learn how leading UK museums are planning to meet the challenges of the future, business sessions include:

  • The future of volunteers
  • Communications museums in the 21st century
  • Partnerships for education and interpretation
  • Developing audiences
  • Challenges of conservation
  • Transport museums outside Europe and North America
