This second capacity-building workshop has been conceived to
enhance local participation and community awareness and to acknowledge
research currently undertaken by a multidisciplinary team of experts.
Furthermore, the workshop complements and builds on research and
training already undertaken with members of “La Tumba Oriente
Brotherhood”, Santiago de Cuba. Members of the Tumba Francesa
“Bejuco”, an authentic rural expression of Tumba Francesa
based in the Cuban province of Holguín, will also participate.
“La Tumba Francesa”, a traditional cultural expression
which was brought to Cuba in the 1790s by Haitian slaves resettling
in the eastern mountains of Cuba, was proclaimed a UNESCO Masterpiece
of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003.
The workshop is organized in the framework of the Action Plan for
the safeguarding of La Tumba Francesa, in cooperation with the UNESCO
Office in Havana and the Cuban National Commission for the safeguarding
of cultural immaterial heritage.
