At the 32nd session (Quebec City, 2008) (Decision 32 COM 10), the
World Heritage Committee decided, in view of the approaching fortieth
anniversary of the World Heritage Convention in 2012, as well as the
inscription of the 1,000th property to the World Heritage List, to
request the World Heritage Centre to convene a workshop to reflect
on the future of the Convention, identify global strategic issues,
key challenges, trends and opportunities facing the World Heritage
Convention and develop approaches to address these issues, as well
as synergies with other international instruments.
As you know, World Heritage Committee members, States Parties and
Advisory Bodies were invited by Decision 32 COM 10 to make written
submissions on global strategic issues, key challenges, trends and
opportunities facing the World Heritage Convention to the World
Heritage Centre with a view to assist in the establishment of the
agenda and preparation of materials for the workshop.
The workshop to reflect on the Future of the World Heritage Convention
which will be held on 25-27 February 2009 at the UNESCO Headquarters.
The aim of the workshop is to initiate a reflection process for
consideration by the World Heritage Committee during its 33rd session
in June 2009, Seville, Spain, and thereafter by the General Assembly
of States Parties at its 17th session, in October 2009.
This workshop will constitute the opportunity to discuss the issues
brought forward through the States Parties’ written contributions:
- Values, messages and image of the Convention
- Conservation and sustainable development
- The World Heritage System
