ABSTRACT

Kolkata /Calcutta, is a city of unique character. It was the place of British empire growth in the east. The heritage palaces, bungalows and parks are centers of Administration (writer's building, Police station, General Post office), business, foreign trade, agricultural and inland water transport, industrial growth, railway , various traditional cultures, congregation of races and languages, heritage centers of art, music, literature, library, Universities, Asiatic society and other learned forums, National museums, Botanical, Zoological, Anthropological surveys, temples, mosques, churches, relics, monuments, city/municipality engineering works. Palaces and buildings are combinations of native Hindu, Islamic, Roman, Gothic, British, Mediterranean, Palladian, Baroque, Rococo architecture. Armenian Church, Saint Pal's Cathedral, Victoria memorial, Senate Hall, Kalighat temple, Tipu Sultan's mosque, houses of Rani Rasmoni, Hastings, Tagore, Laha, Mullick and other land lords, the Maharajah of Burdwan's city palace, splendid ruins, architectural expression are characteristics of Kolkata, immense tourism value, despite their extension by modern architectural wings.
The heritage buildings and cultural centers are under threat and the traditional classic scenario is changing abruptly mainly by invasion of commercial buildings and complexes.
