ABSTRACT
The project concerning the historical centre of Mesola, near Ferrara, has been developed to define guide-lines useful at the future
conservative interventions on the whole historical centre and particularly on surfaces. The research followed these steps: historical
research and comparison between historical picture and the present condition of the historical landscape; high
definition photographic documentation; metric-morphologic survey (by means of direct, topographic and 3D laser scanner
procedures); macroscopic analyses and colorimetric characterization. The 3D survey was performed in order to acquire all the metric-
morphological data and the surfaces specifications useful to the conservation and enhancement of the entire historical centre. The
visual recognition of the different materials, of the surfaces specifications and of the states of conservation was integrated by
processing the reflectance data (acquired by the "time of flight" 3D laser scanner as well as the metric data) and was followed by a
more detailed analysis of the colorimetric data. Hanoi, The Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, 5-10 April 2009 The data acquired
by means of these integrated procedures are stored in a digital data base aimed at the periodical monitoring of surveyed areas and
surfaces and progressive checking of the interventions of restoration. Digital archives allow making it easier to monitor
deterioration processes and to plan restoration interventions. The described procedure can be extremely powerful in monitoring the
architectural items and setting up interactive metric databases able to provide at any time information about the surveyed objects.
The results obtained until now have shown that it is possible to organize data bases of a great variety and nevertheless complementary
to one another, so as to allow a global view of the conservative problem. One of the main out-come of the project has been the
definition of the guide-lines for the interventions on surfaces and the normative actions for conservation of physical integrity
of historic urban landscape. This procedure is very useful to develop a critical procedure and operative tools in order to identify,
analyze and monitor historical urban landscapes. This cognitive process is transferable in other historical contexts and produced the
following more relevant guide-lines: - interdisciplinary competences to preserve the authenticity of the cultural heritage according
to the fundamental principles of minimum intervention, compatibility, interpretability and reversibility; - promotion of
maintenance like common strategy in conservation to avoid strong interventions, maintenance of natural assets to enhance the local
landscape and use of local materials; - development of non and minor destructive techniques and monitoring technologies; -
knowledge of decay mechanisms acting on original materials and structures and identification of critical areas for deeper
investigation; - utilisation of high and innovative technology for no contact surveying and documentation; - understanding of
accuracy and limits of the technologies, also related to different materials toward a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis; -
elaboration of databases containing typical damages, testing problems, methods for assessment, diagnosis and monitoring, case
studies, structural models, publications, research projects, websites, etc. - creation of a data base to collect "best practice"
interventions, innovative successful technologies, integrated conservative systems, technological transfer, high performance
material and technologies and their interaction.
