ABSTRACT

Monument of urban architecture, urban heritage, urban centre have never witnessed such a sharp change as today, or respected, preserved, or faced with looses, uncompensateable damage.
During recent years, Hanoi, a capital of thousand years culture, have many constant discussions of preserving the urban heritage, deform, loose, monument and cultural space injured. Anyhow, most of these monuments are both spiritual and material injured.
One of the reasons of above issues is the perception of urban heritage. Each area, each country, each urban, each community and each expert may have a different concept, perception of heritage and preserving it. It is not difficult to understand it. However, in such a economic integration, inter-culture exchange as today, heritage preserving all over world has a significant achievement, there is a not small part of leader, specialist, community (we) in Hanoi has a perception of heritage seperately, or such as an ancient material, that leads one-sided, unsuitable behavior with heritage.
Perception of urban must be good enough as if it is just born, or prosped, ereous, while most of heritages in Hanoi are lost, sinked, faint...that makes them so different, new and strange to itself. As the result of being taken care, preserved, embellised...many old-age monument has very faint culture, has modern spirit, so different with itself in the past.
In order to preserve and develop the value of urban architecture heritage with the respect past, to transfer to the next generation, Hanoi need to restore, even create a new perception of urban heritage.
