ABSTRACT

Formed in 1920s, Jiangwan - Wujiaochang historic district is located at the northern Yangpu District of Shanghai, China. At that time, due to the policy of `developing their own administering area' by Shanghai municipal government, Jiangwan - Wujiaochang district was positioned as a new city center in the the "Metropolitan Plan of Great Shanghai" of 1929. However, for some social, economical and historical reasons, the "Jiangwan new city center" was constructed for a very short-term period, and after the liberation, it had been the outskirts of Shanghai for a very long time. Thus Jiangwan - Wujiaochang historic district does not remain much historical relics, but the current road pattern almost maintains the features of the original plan. Objectively speaking, though the historic characteristics of Jiangwan - Wujiaochang historic district is not prominent, it was planned and built by Shanghai Municipal Government themselves, so it played an important role in the urban construction history of Shanghai and China.

Planned as a commercial, financial, cultural, sports and residential function area, Jiangwan sub-city center includes the area of Jiangwan - Wujiaochang historic district and the surroundings.

One is the historic district that needs conservation, and the other is the sub-city center that waits for development. The two encounter inevitably. How could we find the right solution in the collision between history and reality to continue the history and as well as to develop the vitality of the region?
From the point of urban development and historic district conservation, and through explicit investigation and analysis of Jiangwan - Wujiaochang historic district's historical, cultural, social, economical, environmental characteristics and the will of local residents, the study tries to propose some specific measures and policies about the continuation of its historical characteristics, social life structure, and the development of its function.

Moreover, this study explores the ways of thinking and methods of conserving and developing historic districts in the process of urbanization.
