ABSTRACT

In the paper I intend to present an extraordinary homestead, which is under national protection and has reflected the authenticity since the first half of 19th Century, when it was erected.
I'd like to present the project of revitalisation, which is based on the transformation of its function from the small trade and the farming up to the middle of the 20th century into the tourist-cultural contemporary function. The renovation is managed by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, Celje.
I'd also like to highlight the main problems facing the protected areas, understanding the issue of cultural heritage, its identity, value, renovation and conservation from the ethnologist's point of view. At the end I intend to expose the biggest problems, regarding heritage management.
On the one side there's an owner or investor, who cares a lot of the homestead that he's inherited. But unfortunately we are dealing with an owner with lack of experience, specific knowledge, cultural management and even lack of financial support. On the other side there's a team of conservators, museologists and representatives of local community, who is deeply involved in the project for the past 10 years and sure it's a challenge, not a burden.
Kozjansko is a small region in the south-eastern part of Slovenia. Because of its specific geographical position the region is economically undeveloped. According to the inhabitants (Kozjanci) the way of life used to be modest, hard and poor. During the 20th Century the burden to the inhabitants caused the 1st and the 2nd World War, the social arrangement after the War and even the earthquake in 1976.
Part of the Kozjansko Region is located within the Kozjanski Park, which was established in 1981 as Trebce Memorial Park. The main reason for establishing Kozjanski Park originates from the historical heritage of this area. Marija Javersek, mother of former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito, was born in Podsreda. In 1999, the official name Kozjanski Park was given to the area with the Law on Natural Protection.
The homestead Sedovska domacija is situated on the western edge of the Kozjansko region. The location gives a fantastic view to the cultural landscape: soft hills, vineyards, 11 churches, small hamlets etc. It is situated along former trade road.
The Project of revitalization of Sedovska homestead started in 1996 with basic conservator work: identification, preparation the documentation of legal protection, making the architecture measures and projects, the topography of the objects and furniture etc. The Sedovska homestead is composed by seven buildings therefore demands an integral approach of protection. The forge is situated close to the local stone-pit, there is also a small inn, a dwelling house with a smoky kitchen and there are three different types and sizes of farmhouses. In the centre of the courtyard there is a typical Slovenian religious sign, a small chapel. The buildings are surrounded by the land, vineyard, meadow, orchard and fields, just like it was early in the 19th Century.
Instead of trade road there goes a wine road across the homestead. Instead of the farmhouse there is a wine cellar and wine shop, instead of inn there is going to be an apartment and instead of farmhouses there are going to be collections, gallery, and a small lecture room for different types of meetings.
The program is based on cultural and touristic themes and the main goal is to avoid mass tourism.
