ABSTRACT

The Mughals rule in India that marks the apex of Indian civilization also carries great assets of architecture and landscaping in the historic period. The Mughals mastered their rich taste in the fields of arts, music, poetry, architecture and gardens in the favorable environment of Indian subcontinent. The city of Lahore also qualified to be the center of above mentioned activities along with Delhi and Agra. All these mentioned characteristics of the city of Lahore compliments to the splendor and grace of the Shalamar Garden.

There were many types of gardens developed by the Mughals. Most of these gardens were attached with palaces and havelies of emperors, nobles and rich people. The second type of gardens was meant to be the resting and halting place for the emperors and military. Shalamar Garden is also classified for the same along with Faroodgah-i-shahinshahan-i-Mughalia at Wah and Nasim Bagh in Kashmir.

This paper will explore the salient features of Shalamar Garden and will compare with the modern parks and garden developed. At end certain recommendation will be made those will help the professional to consider as to be the useful points while designing gardens/parks.
